LEGO unpicker? Yes, you read that right, there really is such a thing.

This morning we were alerted to a new gimmick to sell the latest Vauxhall Grandland X, an SUV from the UK car manufacturer. Posted on Facebook was a link to the latest YouTube video from the car company, boasting about a new “device” called the Life HaX which it dubbed “the modern-day take on the traditional penknife”. There’s an official page too, over at Vauxhall.

Now, “life hacking” has been a “thing” for quite a few years now as people do all the little things to make their lives better. Everything from work productivity to simplicity in the home is covered – basically things that just make your life better. But everyone wants to be a hacker so they’ve requisitioned the term for these little incremental benefits. No technical knowledge required.

But the new Life HaX tool boasts a USB power instead of a can opener, an iPhone pin replacing the tweezers and a torch replaces the blade. There’s also a phone stylus, a fish-eye phone lens attachment and the all-new, blazingly useful Lego unpicker.

A LEGO unpicker? Seriously?

Yes, seriously. Whilst the traditional Swiss army knife’s file and magnifier are gone for the stylus and lens, those diddy little scissors you used to love so much are now replaced by the seriously useful LEGO unpicker.

And it doesn’t stop there. The old British motor manufacturer gladly tells us about a “world first”… a “car maintenance laser”.

Yep, you read that right – a car maintenance laser. What does it do though? Does it zap brake dust from your alloy wheels, unclog crusty screen washer jets or measure the distance between your track rod ends to ensure the wheel tracking is right?

No. You clip the Life HaX device to the inside of the open bonnet (that’s the hood, if you’re in North America) and it points a laser at the screen wash filler, oil cap and the dipstick.

Fab huh?

Never have there been so many innovative tools in a car since Jeremy Clarkson lauded the Vectra, another Vauxhall incidentally, for its dust cap remover, handily hidden behind the fuel filler flap.

So, if you need a gimmicky, er, gimmick for your car, including the all-new, life-saving LEGO unpicker, then head down to your nearest Peugeot, sorry, Vauxhall dealer for the new tool that you didn’t know you couldn’t live without.
